Remuera Intermediate School was established in 1953 and opened in 1954 with a roll of over 500.
In his opening speech in front of over 1000 people, Mr Algie, the then Minister of Education, said that he had decided that intermediate schools were fully justified on educational, social and economic grounds and that the intermediate concept was 'here to stay'.
Present day RI consists of the original main building of classrooms and administration, with additional technology and specialist classrooms being added in more recent years. Additional classrooms have also been added to cater for the present roll of over 900.
