The Importance of Building Confidence in Young People

Confidence is the belief in your ability to succeed or make the right choices. It’s closely linked to self-esteem, resilience, and self-compassion. Helping your child feel good about themselves and cope with challenges can foster a positive cycle of confidence and growth.

Why Confidence Matters

In recent years a good deal has been discussed regarding the decline in confidence in our young people. For pre-teens and teens, confidence plays a crucial role in decision-making, handling peer pressure, and embracing new experiences especially as they head into life after school. Building confidence now sets our young people on a more positive path as they begin to face future challenges on their own. Confident kids are more likely to be assertive, engaged, and persistent. On the other hand, those with low confidence may hold back, avoid challenges, and be more susceptible to negative influences.

For example, a confident child facing friendship issues might quickly bounce back by focusing on other positive relationships. In contrast, a less confident child could take the blame and feel unworthy, affecting their self-esteem.

Tips for Boosting Confidence

Be Practical: Help your child develop practical skills and set achievable goals. Offering a clear strategy for success, like practising basketball to improve, empowers them to take action.

Offer New Experiences: Encourage your child to try different activities, allowing them to discover their strengths and interests. It also teaches them that it's okay not to excel at everything.

Encourage Perseverance: Remind your child that failure is part of learning. Support them in trying again, asking for help, and being kind to themselves.

Model Confidence: Share your own experiences of facing challenges and how you prepare to succeed. This shows your child that everyone experiences nerves, but preparation helps.

Act Confident: Teach your child to make eye contact, smile, and stand tall. These actions can help them feel more confident, even in tough situations.

Practice Social Skills: Guide your child through social scenarios. Practising conversation starters or showing interest in others can build their confidence in social settings.

Praise Effort, Not Outcome: Celebrate your child’s hard work, even if things don’t go as planned. Acknowledging effort encourages a growth mindset.

With your support, young people can develop confidence that helps them navigate life’s challenges and thrive in an increasingly complex and demanding world.

CHINESE LANGUAGE WEEK

Chinese Language Week has been an official celebration in Auckland since 2014. This year's celebrations at RIS were student-led. It was a great opportunity for some of our quieter students to take on leadership responsibilities.

They met once a week leading up to the event to plan and organize all the activities. Students were able to participate in calligraphy, table tennis, paper cutting, Chinese chess and win spot prizes through our daily challenge quizzes.

Thank you to everyone for participating and a special thank you to our student leaders: Christine Cai, Ryan Chou, Yike Duan, Mallory Eng, Paul Gong, Ruth Gong, Ella Jiang, Alanna Law, Norah Li, Aaron Liu, Carlos Liu, Janice Lu, Katherine Ma, Ella Wang, Caleb Wong, Evan Zhao, Alisa Zhou, Lucy Zhou and Rebecca Zhou.

CZ BOYS VOLLEYBALL

The Boys Central Zone Volleyball Tournament was an unforgettable experience that tested our team’s resilience, determination, and teamwork.

Despite a challenging start with two tough losses, the boys never lost sight of their goal. With guidance from their coach and a renewed focus on the fundamentals, they regrouped and found their rhythm in the third match. eir hard work paid off with back-to-back wins, showcasing their ability to rise above adversity and play with heart.

The excitement peaked when a tie-breaker determined their advancement to the consolation round, where they secured 4th place in a thrilling final match. This tournament wasn’t just about the wins; it was a testament to their growth as a team.

The boys demonstrated grit, perseverance, and the power of trust, learning invaluable lessons that will carry them forward in future challenges. They may not have finished as champions on paper, but their spirit and determination made them champions in every other way. Congratulations, boys!

MULTI MATERIALS NEWS

Year 8 Students in Cycle 3 continue to produce innovative products using the school's laser cutter including a range of storage boxes and nightlights. They have also been busy turning chess pieces on the lathe and 3D printing the more intricate components.

Year 7 students have been engaged in producing notepads, windchimes and tealight candle holders using a range of materials and processes. Some students have also made bookends, bent acrylic creatures and spinning tops as extension activities during their time in the Multi Materials classroom.

THANK YOU TO OUR PTA

Chess is a very popular pastime at RI, and our students have enjoyed using the giant chess pieces on our outdoor playing board.

You can often wander through the quiet area and see students planning strategically and collaborating with fellow players to see if they can take away a win. It was with a great deal of excitement that we unwrapped our sparkling new set, supplied by our very supportive PTA. Our chess board is now adorned with bright, new pieces and our chess players are over the moon!

The current students and students yet to come, would like to thank the RI PTA for their thoughtful and generous contribution to our school resources that many students will enjoy for years to come.

Fill The Blues Bus – Let’s Help Families in Need This Christmas

This Christmas season, our school is excited to get involved with the Fill The Blues Bus campaign. We’re helping to collect non-perishable food items to support families in need across our region.

How Can You Help?

Starting Monday, 4 November, we’ll be collecting non-perishable food at school right through until Wednesday, 4 December. All the food will be donated to some amazing charities, including The Village Community Trust, South Seas, and Whakaora Kai.

If you’re keen to help, please start gathering food items and bring them to the boxes in the Ascot Ave foyer between 4 November and 4 December. Together, we can make a difference for families in need this Christmas

Let’s work together to Fill The Blues Bus and make this a season of giving!
