Over the past couple of weeks, as I’ve walked around the school grounds and popped into different spaces, I’ve been reminded again of just how much goes on at Remuera Intermediate.
Out on the courts, students have been training for netball and touch. Across the fields, sports teams are gearing up for their next matches. In between, I’ve caught the sounds of rock bands practising, classroom discussions in full swing, and students heading off on William Pike Challenge adventures.
It’s great to see this wide variety of opportunities on offer, students involved in music, sport, leadership, outdoor education, and more. And all the while, learning in the classroom continues to be the top priority. We’ve had mid-year testing recently, and it’s been good to see students giving their best and reflecting on where they’re at.
What stands out most is the balance. At this stage of their schooling, our young people are not just learning content; they’re learning about themselves. They’re trying things out, building confidence, finding what they enjoy, and discovering where they want to grow. That’s such an important part of the intermediate school experience.
As a staff, we’re proud to support this journey. Whether it’s in the classroom, on the sports field, on stage, or out in the bush, there’s always something going on that helps students take the next step.
Remuera Intermediate is a busy place, but it’s purposeful, and it’s full of opportunities for our students to get stuck in and give things a go.

2025 SCHOOL BOARD ELECTIONS - ONLINE
The boards of all state and state-integrated schools are required to hold elections every three years, and this will be happening again in 2025.
The School Board is an important part of our school as they set the strategic direction for our school, consult with our school community about our school, ensure the school's funding is spent wisely, and ensure that we are giving effect to Te Tiriti o Waitangi within our school. Our School Board currently consists of six parent representatives, the Principal, and a staff representative. This year, we have three parent vacancies on the Board, following a mid-term election held in 2023.
The current board has made the decision to appoint Election Pilot as the Returning Officer for our election and for the election to be provided online. They have been assisting Schools with elections for over 20 years and have been the only election provider accredited by the Ministry of Education to provide online election services since online elections started in 2022.
Nomination and voting forms will be sent to all eligible voters by email directly from Election Pilot. If we don’t have an email address for you, nomination and voting papers will be sent by post, so no one will miss out.
School Board Elections must be held in accordance with the provisions in the Education and Training Act 2020 and the Education (Board Elections) Regulations 2022. Your name and contact details have been provided to Schooled Election Pilot to enable the provision of election services for our school as required by legislation. They will use your contact details for the provision of election services for Remuera Intermediate only and your details will be deleted 60 days after the election date as required by legislation.
If you have any questions about the election process, please contact the Returning Officer directly on 0800 VOTENZ (0800 868 369) or election@electionpilot.nz.
We will continue to keep you updated through the various stages of the election process, and our election date is 10 September 2025.
YEAR 8 DANCE OFF
At the end of Term 2, the Year 8s polished their shoes, straightened their ties, and stepped into their best dresses and suits for the highly anticipated annual Dance Off.
Excitement had been building all term as each lesson brought new moves, more confidence, and plenty of practice for the grand finale. The afternoon was a showcase of hard work, teamwork, and courage as students stepped outside their comfort zones to perform in front of friends and teachers.
A huge thank you to Johnny, our amazing dance teacher, for sharing his expertise and enthusiasm, and to Mrs McGarry for making the event possible, supplying the prizes and supporting our Year 8s throughout the journey.
STAFF VS STUDENTS FOOTBALL
On Tuesday 24th June, the much-anticipated Staff vs Students football match kicked off in front of a lively school crowd. The game got off to a flying start, with the teachers finding the back of the net early to take a 1–0 lead. From there, the match turned into a tense arm wrestle, with both sides battling hard and creating chances.
The student team, made up of talented players from the Year 8 Central Zone boys' and girls' squads, put on a gritty and determined performance. Their skill and teamwork kept the staff on their toes throughout the match. However, a well-timed goal midway through the second half secured a 2–0 win for the teachers.
The game was played in great spirits and was a fantastic spectacle for the school community. More than just a match, it was a celebration of the strong relationships and positive culture that make R.I. such a special place.
EPro8 CHALLENGE
The 2025 EPro8 season is off to a great start at Remuera Intermediate. This year’s teams have already begun training, getting hands-on with the EPro8 kits and exploring a range of creative and technical challenges.
Students are developing their engineering skills through a series of practice builds, learning how to plan, problem-solve, and work together under time pressure.
Using both the main core sets and the electronics extension kits, teams are gaining confidence as they experiment with different components and tackle a variety of mini challenges. Once all groups have completed their training, we’ll kick off our internal school competition where we will be putting their skills to the test in a series of exciting challenges.
MULTIMATERIALS SNAPSHOT
Year 7 Multimaterials students have finished another Specialist Cycle during which they have completed many creative projects and have gained valuable practical skills.
Year 8 students continue to explore material properties and methods of joining various materials together as they finish their wooden tote projects and mini surfboards. As always, workshop safety is our number one priority.
WHAT'S HAPPENING IN THE ART ROOM
Year 8’s are making handmade paper with the view to print on, emboss (press shapes) into and layer up their work.
We made pulp and added a variety of natural seeds, dried flowers and grasses to add texture and interest.
The students use a mesh grill to scoop the pulp and then drained and pressed their sheets before being dried and pressed again.
INTERNATIONAL STUDENTS
We are delighted to welcome a group of international students to our school for a special 4-week program. This is a unique opportunity for our students to connect with young people from different cultures and backgrounds, helping to build empathy, understanding, and global awareness. Throughout their time here, the visiting students will take part in classroom learning, cultural activities, and school life alongside our students.
These shared experiences will encourage all students to learn from one another, celebrate diversity, and develop stronger cross-cultural relationships. For our tamariki, it’s a chance to practise kindness, curiosity, and open-mindedness—essential skills for relating to others who may be different from ourselves.
We believe this exchange will spark meaningful conversations, broaden perspectives, and create lasting friendships. We encourage our school whānau to offer a warm Kiwi welcome to our guests and help make their time in Aotearoa truly memorable.
KAPA HAKA STUDENTS VISIT REMUERA KINDERGARDEN
On Monday, 28th July, after a few reschedules due to weather, the Year 7 members of our Kapa Haka group, along with a small selection of Year 8s, were invited to perform at Remuera Kindergarten as part of their Matariki celebrations.
Our students performed a few songs, much to the delight of the Remuera Kindergarten kids.
After our performance, the kindergarten students sang some of their own songs back to us, which was incredibly cute to watch.
Then it was time for some play, where both the Kapa Haka group and the kindergarten students were able to enjoy spending some time together.
