At the beginning of this term, our entire teaching team, including school leaders and support staff, had the extraordinary opportunity to visit the Google headquarters for a day of professional learning and development. This experience was focused on understanding the rapidly growing influence of artificial intelligence (AI) in education and the wider workforce.
Throughout the day, we explored how AI is already beginning to shape the future of learning, offering tools that can support personalised teaching, streamline planning and assessment, and enhance student engagement. More broadly, we discussed the significant impact AI is having across industries and what this means for the kinds of skills and dispositions our students will need in the years ahead.
This visit wasn’t just about technology, it was about transformation. It challenged us to think critically about how we can use these tools to enrich our programmes, while also maintaining the human heart of education, relationships, creativity, and care.
Importantly, this experience highlights the deep commitment our staff have to their own professional growth and to staying at the forefront of educational innovation. As educators, we know that the world our students are growing into is changing quickly. We have a responsibility to keep learning, adapting, and leading in ways that prepare our tamariki for the future.
We left inspired, informed, and energised—ready to bring new ideas back to our classrooms and continue conversations about the meaningful and ethical use of AI in education.
I am incredibly proud of our team for engaging so fully in this opportunity. It’s a powerful reminder that we are not only teaching for today, but also building the skills, knowledge, and confidence our young people will need for their future.

STAFF NEWS
At the end of last term, we bid farewell to two highly valued members, Richard Peters and Pip Faulknor. Both Richard and Pip have been an integral part of the RI whānau for many, many years. Their contributions to our students and our school have been immeasurable, and we want to take a moment to express our sincere gratitude.
Richard Peters, a truly remarkable member of our school community, joined RI in 1980. His journey with our school has been one of dedicated service, evolving from a classroom teacher to team leader and then onto Head of our Special Needs Department. Richard has been a steadfast support across a range of our neurodiverse students, and along with his team, ensured that this group of students was immersed in an environment that would support their learning at RI.
For those of us who have witnessed his interactions with his students, we saw firsthand the depth of his kindness and compassion that he constantly showed his students. Richard will be missed by the RI community, but we know that he has positively impacted so many of our students’ lives.
We wish Richard the very best in the future and sincerely hope that he pops in for a cuppa at some stage.
As a Y8 classroom teacher and a Team Leader, Pip Fauknor has left a lasting impression on countless students and the vibrant spirit of our school. The students in her class have learnt a lot and had lots of fun
Pip’s passion and dedication to the Arts have been truly inspiring. Leading the RI Choir and the very large Auckland Primary Principals’ Association Choir, Pip spent a lot of time working with young people from across Auckland. The APPA Festival was held in the Town Hall, and it was a spectacular event!
Pip has also organised the energetic Cheerleading squad and the schoolwide Dance programme. We have nearly run out of room for all the Cheerleading trophies and dance costumes. Pip’s involvement in these programmes has provided invaluable opportunities for so many students to experience the joy of performance.
We are so proud to see her take on a new position as Head of Arts at Albany Junior High School, and we extend our warmest wishes to Pip for all the best in her new position.
YEAR 8 CAMPS - ROOMS 23, 24 & 25
Port Waikato camp was epic! We did so much cool stuff. Rock climbing was a highlight - reaching the top was such a buzz. I even surprised myself on the BMX track, catching some serious air. Cooking was also way better than I expected; we made pikelets, and they were surprisingly good!
The tramp up Bald Spur was challenging, but the views were totally worth it. It was awesome hanging out with my friends and trying new things. And a big shoutout to the amazing parents who helped out - you guys rock! Even the teachers were pretty cool! I'd go back in a heartbeat.

KIDS LIT QUIZ 2025
On the final Thursday of Term One, two Remuera Intermediate Kids Literature Quiz teams went to St Cuthbert's to compete in the 2025 Competition.
All the participants were very excited in the lead-up. Both teams performed well on the day.
Our A team placed 21st, and the B team placed 42nd out of 70 schools. Thanks especially to Mrs Jordan, who helped them be spectacular!
All three futsal teams had a full day of competing on the 6th May, representing the school amazingly. The Year 7 team topped their group without losing a game, which meant they faced a good Ponsonby side in the quarter-finals.
They lost in a heartbreaking penalty shootout but dropped into the "Plate" bracket with a chance to finish 5th. They won all of their remaining games, finishing the day in 5th.
The two Year 8 teams had fantastic days. The A team won their group without conceding a goal, whilst the B team squeezed through in 2nd on goal difference.
This sadly set up an RI derby in the quarterfinal, where the A team sent the B team into the "Plate" bracket with a 6-1 win. The B team then went on to win their remaining games again, finishing 5th after beating Mt Roskill and Ponsonby. The A team continued their winning ways, winning the semis, 4-0, and the final 4-3 against a very good Balmoral side.
CYCLING NEWS
Last Sunday dawned fine and clear for the first Team Time Trial of the cycling season at the Pukekohe racetrack. The RI road cycling team has been training over the last few weekends and the school holidays to prepare themselves.
The Team Time Trial consists of three or four cyclists riding in a single file over a set course to record the fastest possible time. The riders take turns at the front of the team to conserve energy. At Pukekohe racetrack, the riders do 5 ¾ laps of the track (around 16km total).
The experienced Y8 Team of Julian Lawakeli, Flynn McRae, and Alex Ward had a brilliant race, overtaking several secondary school teams as they covered the course. The mixed-year team, including Jack Delahunty and Max Tan, were unlucky during their race but took their misfortune in good spirits. They gained some valuable experience for the next race.
Following the Team Time Trials, Auckland Schools Cycling hosted a kermesse race. Julian Lawakeli and Alex Ward rode their hearts out to complete their second race of the day, but couldn't keep up with the leaders' frenetic pace. The experience will help them build their skills for future races.
Bring on the next race in a fortnight’s time!
