Water Polo 2019
The RI water polo squad of 45 players is nearing the end of a great season with many recently playing in the Winter Festival and Tim Sonderer Tournaments, involving schools from across Auckland as well as Tauranga.
Competition was very strong for the Winter Festival and our Red team were very happy to win the Plate for 9th place in the A grade competition. The Black and Gold teams also played well to come 11th and 12th in their grades.
Tim Sonderer Tournament
This is a special tournament for RI as Tim Sonderer was an RI student who loved water polo but who died tragically in an accident. RI achieved a very special result with our aptly named Gold team winning the gold medal in the C grade competition. This was no easy feat, with a number of precision goals from Xavier Melrose and Maia Langatuki in the semi-final and tenacious goals by Max Powell in the final, capitalising on a massive whole team effort of relentless attack and defense. The team left nothing in the tank to achieve a nail-biting 4-3 win against a tough Murray’s Bay opponent in the final.
Congratulations to Max Powell who received the Most Valuable Player award for the whole of C Grade and Ben Lindsey who was awarded Most Valuable Goal Keeper of the grade. The other team members were Milla Steele, Deep Ramprakash, Bailee Phillips-Te Haara and Mac Carver.
Our other Red, Black and Silver teams performed solidly with the Red team improving on its Winterfest ranking to finish a very respectable 7th in the A grade.
The squad has one more tournament to come, with the overriding aim to have fun, further develop our skills and hopefully improve on our rankings.
