Cycling Nationals And North Island School MTB Champs

The September school holidays marked the conclusion of the Road Cycling and Mountain Biking calendar of events for 2017.

In the first weekend of the holidays seven RI cyclists and their families headed to Palmerston North to compete in a 3-day Schools National event comprising a Team Time Trial, Road Race and a Points Race. Two RI teams were entered into the TTT- a mixed boys & girls team with Maia Barclay, Thomas Clark and Ben MacSweeney and a girls team with Kate Waters, Charlotte Wood and Tegan Feringa. The teams placed 6th out of 19 teams & 7th out of 12 teams respectively.

These riders and Aidan Murray also competed in the Road and Points Races. Maia Barclay did particularly well in the U13 girls’ Road Race placing 4th in a field of 32 riders.

Nationals is always a huge weekend where riders have the opportunity to build their skills, strength and tenacity as well as the camaraderie of the club members. Our RI riders did us proud in the way they competed with good sportsmanship and a determination to do their best.

Thanks must go to all the parents who supported these students enabling them to participate in this event. A special thanks to Doug Barclay for his attention to detail in organising this and other events and his dedication to the development of these riders.

One week later three of our students, Maia Barclay, Thomas Clark and Gwilym Sadler competed at the North Island School MTB Champs held in Tauranga. As a Junior Relay Race team these riders came 3rd and in the Cross Country Race in their respective age categories Maia placed 4th, Thomas 5th and Gwilym 18th.
