Around March each year students are invited to express interest in joining the School Ski team.
Trials take place at Snowplanet.
A team of 10 skiers is chosen who then practice weekly for the North Island Primary Schools (NIPS) competition held annually in the third week in August.
Parents organise the trials, practices and event co-ordination.
The North Island Ski Championships are to be held at Mount Ruapehu from Monday 20 August to Thursday 23 August 2018. We travel down on Sunday 19 August. Accommodation will be in the Wanganui Ski Hutt located at Hutt Flat, Whakapapa. Weather permitting the GS races will be held on the Monday, the Dual Slalom races on the Tuesday, the Ski Cross races on the Wednesday and prizegiving on Wednesday afternoon. Thursday is a weather save day.
Training sessions will be held at Snowplanet on Sundays from 9.30 -10.30 am commencing on 7 May 2017. The skiers will have access to the snow from 9.00 am. Training on Queen’s Birthday is yet to be confirmed. Training sessions will be $56 per session payable in advance directly to Snowplanet. Skis and boots can be hired at Snowplanet. Helmets are compulsory and children require their own ski clothing.
Trials will be held at the 28 May training session and are run by Snowplanet staff and do not require input from parent volunteers. The teams will be selected based on the child’s fastest run of three runs. Once selected for the team, commitment is required therefore we will be asking for payment for the competition and accommodation at this time. Competition fees are approximately $90 per skier, accommodation costs are approximately $160 per child and $240 per adult. Competitors are eligible for a competition lift pass of $85 per competitor which includes Sunday 20 August to Thursday 24 August.
