RI offers an extensive range of sporting activities designed to ensure that all students have the opportunity to participate in competitive teams and lunchtime activities. Parents, teachers and professional coaches or tutors are utilised for schoolwide activities.
We promote a healthy and positive attitude towards Physical Education through knowledge, skills and understanding. We are fortunate to be fully equipped for all these sports and the Board of Trustees ensures that funds are available to update uniforms and equipment each year.
Each year students from Year 7 and Year 8 can apply to be part of the Sports Committee. Applications are made in writing and students are interviewed before the committee is announced early in Term 1. Between 20 and 30 students make up the committee.
The Sports Committee has a number of responsibilities including running the PE shed, organising and overseeing Lunchtime Sports and providing support at external events such as the Central Zones cross country competition.
Overview of Sports Teams
Much of the organised weekly sport for this age group is club based. For sports where this is the case, RI teams are formed primarily to compete in the Auckland Schools Zones competition (Central Zone). In some instances there are also practice games or events prior to the Central Zones competition.
For most sports, the Central Zones competition is restricted to one team per school per division. This therefore limits the number of students who can participate in that sport at School. In some instances we are also able to offer introductory sessions for a sport as part of our extensive extra curricula programme.
For more detailed information about a particular sport, please see the individual sport’s page.
